SLU PT Clinical Site Spotlight – Northwestern Memorial
Hospital, Chicago, IL
By Hannah Schumacher (Class of 2022)
My clinical experience at Northwestern Memorial Hospital
was incredible. I was able to spend my time on a general medicine floor with a
variety of patient diagnoses. I even was given the opportunity to go to the
medical ICU which was eye opening as well as a great learning experience.
Another floor my clinical instructor, Megan Burwell, covered was the pulmonary unit where I spent time working
with patients whose lungs were affected from COVID-19. I thoroughly enjoyed my
experience with each of these patients as they wanted so badly to work hard so
that they could return home to their families.
My CI taught me
how to be patient, compassionate, and loving to all the patients we
encountered. She treated each patient with respect and showed me how PT's also
are there for patients mentally, just not physically. The patients we worked
with had a lot going on in their life, but it was humbling to see their
dedication to improve for themselves, their families, and us.
Megan, thank you for all you taught me in the short 9 weeks
we had together. I thoroughly enjoyed learning from you in acute care. You made
me enjoy the inpatient setting so much!
